SENATE MEETING OF 12 January 2004

A meeting of the Senate of Acadia University occurred on Monday, 12 January 2004, beginning at
4:10 p.m. with Chair Robert Raeside presiding and 44 members present.
 
1)   Minutes of the Meeting of
      10 November 2003

 

It was moved by C. MacLatchy and seconded by B. Latta that the minutes of Monday, 10 November 2003 be approved. 

MOTION WAS CARRIED.

2) Announcements and Communications

   a) From the Chair
      -re Regrets
 

 

Regrets were received from P. Cook, J. Dewolfe, S. Enman, R. Gossage, G. Hepburn, A. Irving, L. McDonald, S. Phillips, and J. Sumarah.
  b) From the Vice-President
      (Academic)

 

C. MacLatchy reminded Senators that applications are being accepted for the Teaching, Innovation, and Improvement Fund proposals.  He noted an internal/external search for a Dean of Faculty of Pure and Applied Science is in progress.  C. MacLatchy advised that the annual VP(A) Report would be available for the next meeting of Senate.

 c) From the Academic  
      Integrity  Committee
      -re Faculty Representatives

 
M. Grieve advised that further to the October meeting of Senate, the Committee on Academic Integrity has not been struck.   Each of the faculties' nomination committee is to elect a representative.

   a) Timetable, Instruction

      Calendar Dates

It was moved by R. Proulx and seconded by J. Mosher that the 2004-2005 calendar dates as attached to today's agenda be approved.
 
R. Jotcham confirmed 1.) that regulations state a student is not to have three exams consecutively; and 2.) that there is currently no Fall Convocation at Acadia University. 
 
Discussion was held on the implications or domino effect of changing any one date on this calendar.  Whether Acadia University has a policy of beginning its winter term on a Monday was not clear and this will have to be clarified by the TIE Committee.  Dates for study days in April and for the Easter Holiday were noted as incorrect.
 
It was moved by R. Proulx and seconded by M. Grieve that this item be referred back to the TIE Committee for correction and to review the start of Winter Term date for 2005.

  b) Acadia Divinity College -
      Curriculum Change

It was moved by R. Wilson and seconded by H. Hopkins that curriculum changes as attached to today's agenda for the Acadia Divinity College Youth Ministry Program, be accepted.

  c) Curriculum Committee-
      Course changes in Faculty
      of Art (034-22-CRE to
      034-28-CRE)
 


It was moved by B. Matthews and seconded by J. Davies that the course changes as outlined in the attachment to today's agenda for the Faculty of Arts, be accepted.
 
B. Matthews and Arts Faculty representatives gave a brief explanation of various changes.

It was moved by P. Cabilio and seconded by L. Oliver that the course changes as outlined in the attachment to today's agenda for the Faculty of Science, be accepted.
 
P. Cabilio gave a brief explanation of various changes.

It was moved by G. Ness and seconded by S. Markham-Starr that the course changes as outlined in the attachment to today's agenda (including late additions for Education) for the Faculty of Professional Studies, be accepted.

The following was given as notice of motion from the Senate Archives Committee: 
 


In recognition of the managerial role that the Deputy University Archivist plays in the University Archives, the Senate Archives Committee moves that the Deputy University Archivist be made a member of the Senate Archives Committee.
 
 
In recognition that the activities and deliberations of all the committees of the Acadia University Senate are critical to the functioning of the University, the Senate Archives Committee moves that the Secretary or Chair of each Committee send its records to the University Archives for permanent preservation.  Further information as attached to the Senate agenda of 12 January 04.

 
   e) Vice-President (Academic)
      - Special Fall Convocation
        for Installation of
        President, Dr. Gail Dinter-
        Gottlieb (034-43-VPA)
 
 


 
It was moved by C. MacLatchy and seconded by B. Matthews that a special Fall Convocation be held on October 2, 2004, in honour of the installation of Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb as President of Acadia University.
 
R. Jotcham confirmed this proposal would mean adjustments for the TIE committee to consider for the 2004-2005 Academic Calendar.  Any changes would have to be well publicized.

 6) Adjournment P. Cabilio moved this meeting be adjourned.  It was 5:20 p.m.
