By-Laws Committee Report

At the September 9th, 2002 meeting of Senate, members of the By-Laws Committee were asked to consider the following two aspects pertaining to membership of the Library Committee:

1) Members serving from the Faculties of Arts, Professional Studies and Pure and Applied Science are appointed for one-year terms and cannot be reappointed until all units within the applicable faculty have been represented. As a result, there may be a problem with continuity in representation on the Committee.

2) While the membership makes reference to the Faculties of Arts, Professional Studies and Pure and Applied Science, no reference is made to the Faculty of Theology.

Section VIII (e) i) of the Senate By-Laws currently reads as follows:

The membership of the Library Committee shall be elected in accordance with Article VI.1 and shall be as follows:

A Chair appointed for a three year term from the membership of Senate, nominated and elected under the provisions of VIII (b) ii.
Two members of the Faculty of Arts appointed for a one year term on a rotational basis throughout all academic units, with no one unit sitting twice before other units have served one term.
Two members of the Faculty of Professional Studies appointed for a one year term on a rotational basis throughout all academic units, with no one unit sitting twice before other units have served one term.
Two members of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Science appointed for a one year term on a rotational basis throughout all academic units, with no one unit sitting twice before other units have served one term.
The Librarian
One professional librarian
One member of the Acadia Divinity College (Divinity College Collection only)
The Vice-President (Academic) of the Students Council
One undergraduate student
One full-time graduate student

After considerable debate and consultation, we move that By-Law VIII (e) i) be  amended (amendments highlighted in bold) as follows:

A Chair appointed for a three year term from the membership of Senate, nominated and elected under the provisions of VIII (b) ii.
Two members of the Faculty of Arts with each appointed for either a one  year or two year  term on a rotational basis throughout all academic units, with no one unit sitting twice before other units have served one term.
